History of the FirmThe origins of the firm date back to 1998 when professionals came together from the Big Six accounting and technology worlds to focus on operations and finance improvement. To add to our strong operations capabilities, we joined forces with senior leaders from the lending and restructuring industry which led to the current firm’s broad experience across turnaround, restructuring, bankruptcy and performance improvement.
Senior Managing Directors
CTPHoward Bailey is a Senior Managing Director at Arch + Beam. His experience as an advisor and interim manager is spread across multiple industries. Mr. Bailey has represented both companies and creditors, including acting as Chief Restructuring Officer/CFO. Additionally, he has served debtors and creditors in Chapter 11 cases. Mr. Bailey has also served as the Assignee in Assignments for the Benefit of Creditors and testified as an expert witness in cases involving finance, banking, mergers & acquisitions and capital markets transactions. Prior to Arch + Beam, Mr. Bailey was Western Region SVP for GE Capital’s Restructuring Finance Group. Additionally, he held the roles of SVP Origination and SVP Team Leader Portfolio & Underwriting. In the latter capacity, he managed a team of professionals responsible for multi-billion portfolio, as well as structuring, underwriting, approving and executing on new loans. He successfully closed billions in commitments and was responsible for several successful workouts. Prior to GE, his experience includes several Bank of America predecessors, most notably BankBoston, where he completed the Management Training Program, and spent 1990 to 1995 in its Loan Workout Group. During this time, he successfully worked out several high profile accounts. As a result of Mr. Bailey’s track record, he relocated to San Francisco in 1997 to establish the Western Region, including offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Mr. Bailey is a Certified Turnaround Professional (“CTP”). He is on the Board of the Northern California Turnaround Management Association and is past Chairman of the Northern California Commercial Finance Association. He has been a speaker on numerous occasions and has served on a multitude of panels, including the American Bar Association, Association for Corporate Growth, Commercial Finance Association, Credit Management Association, California Bankruptcy Forum and Turnaround Management Association.
CTP, CIRA, Six Sigma Black BeltMatthew English is a Senior Managing Director at Arch + Beam and is an experienced strategy, operations and turnaround consultant. He has a proven track record of helping middle-market and multi-national companies improve performance and restructure operations. His expertise focuses on helping companies optimize their sales, operations, and organizational capabilities to drive increased productivity and margin improvement. Mr. English has managed initiatives related to strategic planning, performance improvement, merger integration/divestitures, organizational restructuring, outsourcing, and process/IT improvement. In addition, his work has focused on helping companies leverage core business assets (people, process and technology), adjust cost structures, and develop new revenue streams to enable business stabilization and growth. Mr. English’s international work experience includes engagements in the U.K, France, Germany, Singapore, Malaysia, India, and China. He has managed multiple global Program Management Offices with teams reporting into him from the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe. He is very experienced working across multiple cultures simultaneously, and knows how to build a high performing international team working face-to-face or remotely. He has held the title of CEO, COO or CFO in firms ranging from $5 to $150MM in revenues and been a trusted advisor to leaders of multi-billion dollar divisions. His work has also included roles as Chapter 11 Financial Advisor, Federal Receiver, Assignee for Assignment for Benefit of Creditors and an advisor to a Chapter 11 Trustee. His background includes working for Deloitte & Touche and Accenture. He is President of TMA Northern California and a Trustee of TMA Global. Mr. English received his B.S. in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering from Cornell University. He is a Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor (“CIRA”), Six Sigma Black Belt, certified Project Management Professional (“PMP”), and Certified Turnaround Professional (“CTP”). His lives with his wife and three children in Northern California.

DirectorScott Geary brings more than 25 years of experience of management and transaction experience, ranging from engineering management roles to CEO, CFO, and COO roles of companies doing business across the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Exceptional leadership skills and strong project management skills were developed during an early career in electrical engineering and particle physics at Yale University Physics Department and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, followed by work in production/operations management with Ford Motor Company France. Building on this foundation, Scott acquired an MBA from INSEAD and in the proceeding 20 years has developed expertise across the spectrum of business. He thrives in fast-paced, complex environments (with particular expertise in distressed private equity), where he leverages expertise in M&A, finance, operations, and complex program management. As a functional expert in financial and operational restructuring and related merger and acquisition activities, his foundational skills are industry agnostic, facilitating his success in adding value in many varied industries. Mr. Geary has a M.B.A. in Finance and Corporate Strategy from INSEAD and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University.
Senior ConsultantSonal Loomba Patney is an experienced corporate and investment banker and financial advisory consultant having worked with diverse companies in international and domestic markets originating, structuring, marketing, and advising on debt and equities transactions that ranged from $20,000 to $4.0 billion – these included syndicated loans, private placements, initial public offerings, and follow-on offerings for about 19 years. Ms. Patney has worked with early stage, middle market, and large corporate companies, as well as institutional investors, such as hedge funds, private equity firms, and foreign banks. Ms. Patney is a graduate of Columbia University and New York University, and holds an MPA with a concentration in International Economic Policy, and a BA in Political Science, respectively. Sonal’s academic research focus has revolved around economic policy, developing and emerging economies, trade, and hedge funds.
Senior AssociateBrendan Cronin is an experienced consultant and finance professional and has worked in a credit and originator role for several commercial banks. His broad experience with manufacturers, distributors, technology companies, healthcare, real estate and professional services firms allows him to be a valuable contributor to client engagements. Mr. Cronin holds an MBA from Notre Dame de Namur and BSBA from Saint Louis University, where he was the captain of the rugby team. Mr. Cronin currently serves as treasurer for the Northern California Commercial Finance Association board of directors.
Specialities: Energy & UtilitiesAli Mirza has two decades of global structured and project finance experience, first as a financier/ advisor and then as a project developer. He has served as the Head of Project Finance for a utility-scale solar power developer in addition to advising other renewables energy companies. Previously, he was the Vice President & Head of Project Finance at Solar Trust of America (STA). Prior to joining STA, Mr. Mirza founded AIM Capital Ventures LLC (AIM), a boutique investment banking firm providing financial advisory services to renewable energy companies. His solar clients included utility-scale project developers such as Meridian Energy, Solargen and RES America. Mr. Mirza subsequently joined NextLight/First Solar as a full-time, in-house consultant. He has also advised geothermal and next-generation biofuels. Previously, Mr. Mirza worked for several years at GE Capital as a Vice President responsible for underwriting asset based (ABL), cash flow and debtor-in-possession (DIP) transactions and managing a $1.5 billion portfolio, including the DIP financing for Calpine. He began his structured finance career in Bank of America’s Global Project Finance group, based initially in San Francisco (covering independent power producers in North America) and later in Hong Kong (covering Asia) and New York (covering Latin America).
Bill English, J.D.
Operations ManagerBill English has managed the internal finance and operations of Arch + Beam and their portfolio companies since 1998. He brings extensive business experience having been a partner in a family insurance business and a practicing attorney in New York State. Mr. English’s expertise includes knowledge of tax, HR accounting & finance, payroll, insurance and general administrative functions. Mr. English received his B.S. in Accounting and J.D. from the State University of N.Y. at Buffalo.
